Ruminating on a foam core German shepherd I made in 2009, DOG YEARS explores the ambivalent symbolic nature of this object, which appeared in several solo performances. Part memoir, part document, part annuary, DOG YEARS traces and tracks this animal’s imprint on national, domestic and personal narratives.  Breeding and retrieving various details of the last 100 years, DOG YEARS winds through real and imaginary places in the United States from the White House and the Jim Crow South to the Depression-era frontier in The Journey of Natty Gann. At the same time, I attempt to contour the choreographic process—an elusive sense of events that expands and contracts time, bodies and history like the ambiguous algorithm of a dog year.
